Body Image
Why don’t I look like that?

We girls really do underappreciate ourselves in a massive way! Is it all our fault? Not at all! Everything we read/watch is telling us we are not good enough in the skin we are born in. Think about your routine. Are your nails painted? What was wrong with their original colour? Are your eyelashes longer? What was wrong with their original length? And the list goes on and on – face colour, heels for height, hair colour, breast size, bum size, eye brow thickness, eye lid colour, cheek colour…….. IT’S ENDLESS!! It is no wonder we do not enjoy looking in the mirror!

To add to all of that, our role models pictures are typically edited several times before we even get a glance. They always look perfect! No bloody wonder, so would we if we had a wee digital nip and tuck for every snap!

The truth is you may not be happy but are you seeing yourself for what you are? There is a significant moment for me that reminds me not to be hard on myself. I do not see what’s in the mirror. I was on holiday a while back and despite how confident I look in the photo, I felt really fat. I was very self-conscious and did not appreciate myself at all. That whole holiday I felt like a whale! I now look back at the photo thinking what on earth was I seeing in the mirror!? I looked absolutely fine!

Now I make a conscious effort to appreciate myself! Life is far too short for not enjoying yourself! It helps greatly that I lead a healthy lifestyle. I never starve my body. I always fill myself full of nutritious whole foods and drink my daily quota of water. I also enjoy an active lifestyle. However, I never punish myself with exercise. I enjoy my activity greatly.

L-fit Glasgow Personal Training Tips to appreciating your body

  • Every morning tell yourself one thing you love about your body
  • Exercise and be active for fun, not punishment. Move in a way you enjoy!
  • Never wear clothes that you don’t feel good in
  • Eat nutritious wholefoods and hydrate well
  • Don’t analyse your photos. You look fab, you feel fab, forget every daft pose that apparently makes you look thin! Life is too short for that!
  • Get rid of the filters! These are not good for our mental health when related to body image issues
  • Be yourself and appreciate everything your body can do for you!
